Note on rank
There are conflicting statements regarding the rank of Erich Wedel.
In his personnel file (Barch 73592/6) the service record shows at position 13, with the date 01.11.1944, the rank of First Lieutenant.
Under the content of the order, nature of the change, it states: RDA 1.2.44 (357b); (Dfg. 202 v. 15.1.45).
It is therefore questionable whether the appointment took effect.
.
Assessment
The assessment of 01.04.1943 states:
Open, sincere character; represents the ideas of National Socialism and understands how to convey them to his subordinates. Useful professional knowledge and performance; open cheerful disposition, physically strong and capable.
Among his strengths is his readiness for deployment in any task. He is willing to develop further and to reduce existing weaknesses.
Among his weaknesses is his not yet completed physical and mental bearing. He lacks rigidity in his physical bearing when on duty and when making reports. In summary, the still existing weaknesses are offset by his good qualities. He is to be regarded as a platoon commander of average performance.
On 01.07.1944 Erich Wedel was assessed again.
Brief assessment:
Open, honest character who does not hold back his opinion.
He is a “brave, repeatedly proven fighter” (assessment of the Cdr./Gren. Rgt 6). His service performance is adequate, but he strives to become fully competent. Proven National Socialist. Mentally of average ability, physically strong, enduring. Fulfils his position.
Strong points: Passionate soldier, eager for deployment.
Weak points: Not yet complete in his mental and physical development, still requires guidance.
In summary, Erich Wedel is assessed as average.

Accident and death of Erich Wedel
There is very little information about the circumstances that led to the death of Erich Wedel.
The decisive reference to the accident comes from the interrogation of Lieutenant Schulz. Schulz stated that the training in the handling of hand grenades (with HE plastic) and explosives (NIPOLIT) had been so brief that a member of the unit had an accident during the subsequent experimentation.
If the dates on the personnel index card of Erich Wedel are correct, then the accident occurred on 24.11.1944 during the throwing of a hand grenade. Shell splinters wounded the right popliteal fossa and severed the popliteal vein. On 25.11.1944 at 3:15 hrs Erich Wedel died in the reserve hospital in Grafenwöhr. Erich Wedel was buried at the Catholic cemetery in Grafenwöhr. In 1956 reinterment took place at the War Cemetery in Hofkirchen.
